The work of NGOs at the United Nations can be understood in two functions: 1) to spread knowledge of and garner support for the various United Nations programs within the constituency of the Marianist Family and those national governments where they are located; 2) to advocate within the United Nations system (CLICK HERE to see a chart of the UN System) through collaboration with other NGOs, lobbying various member state delegates and relating to UN personnel the local impact UN programs have on the NGO's own constituents.

In 2003 the leadership of the Society of Mary (Marianists), meeting in Ecuador, decided that the focus of the work for the NGO should be those international issues which most directly impact the lives of Children and youth.

In New York the Marianists work with the following NGO committees:

  • Social Development (and its Sub-Committee on Poverty Eradication)
  • Family
  • Education
  • Financing for Development
